Island Mountain Arts pres. ArtsWells Festival 2018 August 3 – 6 | Wells & Barkerville, BC
As the dew freezes and the snow covers the trees, the tiny town of Wells sleeps in hibernation, gathering strength for the 15th celebration of all things art. In August, when the sun is at its highest and the meadows grow lush with wildflowers once again, the fantastical world of ArtsWells awakens to create space for celebration and artistic expression in all forms! With open arms it has also made space for you.
The four-day extravaganza in this colourful community features music of all genres in twelve unique venues throughout the historic gold mining towns of Wells and Barkerville. Intimate rooms include the Sunset Theatre and St. Saviour’s Church in Barkerville provide space for quiet listening, while the Wells Community Hall and the Outdoor Stage give you room to move & groove together. With both towns creating the festival site, artistic experiences abound on every street corner with visual art installations, roving performers, parades, local galleries and artisans to explore. Delve further into the experience of art with many workshops and special collaborations taking place throughout the weekend.
“Most importantly ArtsWells is a place to connect with one another. Enjoy nature at your fingertips, create memories by the river then follow the path to the sweet sounds that capture your imagination. Our festival is a safe space, treating all genders, LGBTQ+, cultures and religions equally. We ask that anyone attending respect each other and allow freedom of expression without fear or judgement or discrimination. We acknowledge that ArtsWells takes place on the traditional and unceded territory of the Lhtako Dene Nation.”
Julie Fowler, Executive Director.
2019 General Admission Weekend passes can be found here. Children under 12 years of age are free!

The art doesn’t end with the festival weekend, there are many images and videos that help keep the weekend alive and are art themselves.

There are many skilled photographers who have also captured the spirit of the festival. Below are some photos by Kent Bernadet and Mary Matheson, who have kindly allowed us to post them here. To see more of their ArtWells albums go to Mary’s ArtsWells Album and Kent’s ArtsWells Album.
